U.S. Government Bans Vegemite?
Boing Boing links to a Courier-Mail article today about a supposed U.S. ban on Vegemite.
I'm not so sure about the legitimacy of this supposed ban. The Courier-Mail article says someone was prevented from bringing Vegemite across the Canadian border because it contains "folate".
According to the NIH, folate is a naturally occuring B vitamin found in foods. The synthetic version of folate used as a supplement is called "folic acid".
Vegemite is made from yeast which is rich in B vitamins.
From the Vegemite home page -
"The original recipe of Vegemite as a concentrated yeast extract has remained virtually unchanged for 80 years.Yeast is known as a natural source of the vitamin B complex which includes thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, biotin, p-amino benzoic acid and several other compounds."
